What is an old fashioned?

An old fashioned is a whiskey based cocktail that is traditionally made with Bourbon, sugar (or simple) syrup and bitters, and muddled fruit.

The old fashioned has many variations including versions using brandy or tequila instead of whiskey. Here are the most common old fashioned recipes:

 

Old Fashioned with muddled fruit and soda

 

2 oz bourbon

1 tsp sugar

2 tsp water

Muddle orange slice and maraschino cherry

Topped with soda water

 

Old Fashioned

 

2 oz bourbon

.5 oz simple syrup

2 dash Angostura bitters

2 dash orange bitters

Orange peel garnish

 

Brandy Old Fashioned

 

2 oz brandy

1 sugar cube

3 dashes Angostura bitters

Muddle orange slice and 2 maraschino cherries

Top with 7UP or sour mix with soda water

 

Oaxacan Old Fashioned

 

1 1/2 oz tequila

.5 oz mezcal

1 teaspoon agave syrup

1 dash of Angostura bitters

Orange peel garnish
