How to set up modifers in Backbar

    Overview

    Who can use this feature?

    All users

    All plans

When you connect your point-of-sale system with Backbar, your item modifiers are imported from your POS in the same way your items are. This allows you to match your POS workflow to capture all sales, even for item substitutions or serving size changes.

    How to set up modifers

All modifiers from your point-of-sale will be imported into Backbar.  To see your modifers, click the Sales section in the navigation menu and click Modifiers.

    • Select the modifier you'd like to set up by clicking the check box next to the item
    • Next, click the Action dropdown menu in the right panel on the screen
    • Select the action type for the modifier. The action types are:
      • Add ingredient
      • Remove ingredient
      • Substitute product
      • Change serving size to...
      • Multiply serving size by...

For most point-of-sales, modifiers are universal. This means that anytime that modifier is selected in the Point-of-Sale, the corresponding modifier in Backbar will be applied to the transaction.

A note for Toast Users - Toast modifiers are specific to the POS menu group, so you may want to add additional labeling to your modifiers in Toast to help identify the modifiers when you set them up in Backbar.

    Add or Remove ingredient

Use the search bar to find the item you want to add as an ingredient. You can only select one item per modifier when adding or removing an ingredient.

If adding an ingredient, set the serving size and then click Save.

    Substitute Product

When substituting a product, you'll first select the item you want to remove from the sale and then you'll select the item you want to use a the substitution.

You can choose to remove a specific ingredient or you can remove a subtype of ingredient, so any ingredient with that subtype will be removed and replaced with the new item.

A subtype in Backbar refers to types of spirits, beers, and wines. For example, Whiskey is a subtype. So you can set up a the substitute modifier to remove any whiskey used in a recipe with another item.

Once you've select the item or subtype you want to replace, you'll search for the item you want to use as the substitution and then add the serving size.

    Change or multiple serving size

For modifications to serving size you can choose to modify the following item categories:

    • Specific ingredient
    • Ingredient subtype
    • Ingredient type
    • All ingredients

For most users, changing a serving size will include common modifers like "Rocks" or a "Double." Because most modifiers are universal, setting these serving size modifiers to All Ingredients will be the most efficient way to apply serving size modifications.

After you selected the item category to apply the modifier to, you'll need to set the new serving size or the multiplier for the serving (eg., 2 for 2x).

    Modifying cocktails or other recipes

A single modifier can only update a single item or item cateogy in Backbar. For cocktail recipes, you can't modify multiple ingredients in the cocktail.

For example, if you sell a margarita, you can modifiy the tequila by choosing to add or subtitute an item. But you could not add the other mixer ingredients with a modify.

When setting up your cocktails in your POS, it's best for the workflow to select the Cocktail then select the Spirit.
